Study in the U.S.
Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) in the United States - Deadline January 4, 2008
The U.S. Embassy announces the 2008 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program. This fellowship offers teachers and graduate students of English, between 21 and 29 years old, a year at a U.S. college or university to study English and to work as Arabic language assistants. During the past three years, Lebanese fellows have been placed at several prestigious American institutions. Three Lebanese teachers are currently at the University of Kentucky, Ramapo College of New Jersey, and Florida State University.
The Fulbright FLTA Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, funds a nine-month, non-degree program at colleges and universities in the United States. Award recipients teach Arabic and enroll in at least two American studies or teaching methodology classes each semester. Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree by August 1, 2008. The fellowship covers roundtrip airfare, tuition, health insurance, room and board, and a monthly stipend to cover incidental expenses. All applicants must be between 21 and 29 years old at the time of the application. They should have an excellent academic record, fluency in English, an outstanding character, and a desire to use skills gained in the United States to serve Lebanon.
To apply for this program, interested candidates must complete an application, which includes essays. If applicants have taken the TOEFL or a similar English proficiency exam, scores should be included. Finalists will be required to take the TOEFL (low-income applicants may apply for fee waivers). Required application materials must be submitted to the U.S. Embassy (Public Diplomacy Section) by January 4, 2008.
