U.S. Embassy Announces a $5 Million Program to Promote Civil Society Engagement
March 27, 2008
The U.S. Embassy announced today that the U.S. Congress allocated $5 million to enhance the engagement of civil society organizations in a range of issues important to Lebanon. Five U.S. non-governmental organizations will form partnerships with various local non-governmental organizations to develop Lebanese citizens’ involvement with their government.
The American Bar Association (ABA) and the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) will promote rule of law by focusing on strengthening government accountability and transparency through freedom of information and whistleblower protection. In addition, the ABA and the CIPE will work collectively with various organizations to advocate for anti-corruption reforms; and, they will help raise awareness among small businesses of their lawful rights and how this knowledge can protect businesses.
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) will both enhance community decision-making. CRS will provide community decision-makers and municipal leaders with practical skills to address diverse community issues, thus forming more consensus minded communities. IREX will focus on youth who will be able to bridge divisions in their communities and advance governmental transparency and accountability.
Like the other U.S. non-governmental organizations, Internews will fund innovative media project with local organizations, and train media owners and managers in business management techniques.
In democracies, civil society organizations are critical to promoting transparency, good governance, and citizens’ access to their government. With these funds, the U. S. Government is showing its strong support for Lebanon and its citizens.
